Pentatonic and Blues Scales |
Much of rock and blues guitar is based on pentatonic scales. Technically any scale consisting of five notes is a "pentatonic" scale, but in common usage, this usually refers to one of the scales discussed here. These scales have roots in Mongolian and Japanese culture, as well as being the basis for rock and blues lead playing. The pentatonic scale can be either major or minor. The major pentatonic scale is basically a major scale with the 4th and 7th notes removed. It consists of five notes built on the following pattern: T T T+ST T T+ST (T+ST is three semi-tones).
The removal of the 4th and 7th notes makes the pentatonic scale ideal for improvising lead melodies on top of various chords. Below is the A pentatonic minor scale in tab form.
